Tampa Holds On To Fifth Spot In AVCA PollSeptember 22, 2009
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the third consecutive week, The University of Tampa volleyball team is ranked No. 5 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll. The ranking marks the highest of the season for the Spartans, who were tabbed No. 10 in the preseason poll.
Defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul (32), who handed UT is lone loss of the season, remains in the top spot as a unanimous selection. Cal State San Bernardino, Emporia State and UC San Diego join Tampa in the top five.
Fellow Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern comes in at No. 17 while Eckerd is No. 24. NCAA South region foe West Florida was pegged at No. 19 as Saint Leo, Nova Southeastern, Barry and Lynn all received votes.
With an 11-1 record, Tampa is coming off a pair of weekend road victories over SSC opponents. UT won its SSC opener with a 3-0 sweep of Lynn on Saturday and followed up the victory with a 3-1 triumph over Nova Southeastern.
Tampa is back in action on Wednesday at Rollins for a 7 p.m. match with the Tars. UT then returns home to host Florida Tech on Saturday at 4 p.m.
UT has now been ranked in the national top 25 for 181 consecutive weeks, which marks the nation's second-longest active streak behind Central Missouri State. The Spartans have also been represented in the top 10 for 60 straight weeks.
