Spartans Sail Past PBA in Second Go-AroundJanuary 21, 2012
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team (8-9) defeated the Palm Beach Atlantic University (7-13) Sailfish by a score of 65-45 on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
The Spartans led for the majority of the first half including a 19-0 run starting at the 16 minute mark. The Spartans entered the locker room with a 27-14 advantage to end the first half.
Seniors Sarah Wickham and Jaleesa Harmon led the Spartans with 10 points apiece in the first half, while teammate Illyssa Vivo grabbed eight rebounds.
The Sailfish were held to under 30 percent shooting from the field in the first half. Senior Selethia Jackson led her squad with 10 points to end the first half.
UT connected on 4-6 (66.7%) 3-point field goals in the second half alone. The Spartans dominated in the paint for a total of 28 points for the game.
Jaleesa Harmon led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Wickham with 16 points. Vivo recorded the game's only double- double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite trailing by 15 or more points in the second half, PBA managed to shoot 50 percent from three point range. Jackson led the Sailfish with 14 points, while teammate Hayley Fields recorded 13 points for the game.
The Spartans will travel to Melbourne, Fla. on Wednesday to play Florida Tech University in a Sunshine State Conference match up. The game is set for 5: 30 p.m.
