Tampa Captures 2018-19 SSC Women's Mayors' Cup

MELBOURNE, Fla. - For the first time since 2013-14, the University of Tampa has captured the women's division of the Sunshine State Conference Mayors' Cup all-sports trophy. This marks the fifth women's Mayors' Cup for the Spartans.

First presented following the 1986-87 academic year,  the SSC's all-sports trophy earned its name from the Mayors of member school communities who initially sponsored the award.

Tampa ran away with this year's trophy, generating an unprecedented 18.5 more points than the competition's next best team. In total, the Spartans tallied 75.5 points across 10 conference sports to win the women's award for the third time in seven years. UT generated its record-breaking score thanks to conference championships in cross country, volleyball (tied with Barry), swimming, and lacrosse (tied with Florida Southern & Rollins). The Spartans also produced meaningful points following runner up performances in basketball and softball as well as fourth-place finishes in soccer and golf.

UT won back-to-back women's Mayors' Cups in 1991-92 & 1992-93, then again in 2012-13 & 2013-14. With the win, Tampa sits alone in third place among women's Mayors' cup winners. All five of the Spartans' trophies have been won outright.

Nova Southeastern University finishes in second-place with 57 points, while Florida Southern College ends the year in third-place with 54 points. NSU brought in the majority of its score with Top-4 finishes in soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, and tennis. The Moccasins recorded significant points with conference titles in basketball and lacrosse (tied with Rollins & Tampa) and also finished Top-4 in cross country, volleyball, and swimming.

Mayors' Cup Scoring
Mayors' Cup scoring is based on regular season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for finishing eleventh. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first place points will be awarded based on the number of teams competing. Head-to-head results will break SSC regular season standings so that points may be assigned. When head-to-head competition cannot break a tie Mayors' Cup points will be split.
