On Tuesday, November 4, the University of Tampa's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) led a spirited and impactful beach cleanup on Davis Island in honor of NCAA Civic Engagement Day. The event brought together more than 50 student-athletes from all 20 NCAA-sponsored sports at Tampa, showcasing the university's commitment to community service and civic responsibility.
From 8:00 to 11:30 a.m., student-athletes gathered at the Davis Island parking lot, where they were led by event organizers Taylor Brannon and Angel Williams (beach volleyball). After a group photo and supply distribution, teams dispersed to three designated cleanup sites, each led by two site captains. A key emphasis of the day was intermixing athletes from different sports, fostering camaraderie and collaboration across teams.
Armed with gloves, trash bags, and plenty of snacks, the volunteers scoured the shoreline, collecting litter and debris to help preserve one of Tampa's most beloved recreational areas. The event concluded with a return to the parking lot for a final group photo and heartfelt thanks, while the KTBB crew handled trash pickup from each site.
What Is NCAA Civic Engagement Day?
NCAA Civic Engagement Day—also known as All Vote No Play Day—was established in 2020 as a landmark initiative to promote civic involvement among college athletes. Held annually on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, the day suspends all countable athletic activities, including practices and games, to give student-athletes the opportunity to vote, volunteer, and engage in their communities.
The initiative was born from a grassroots movement led by coaches and student-athletes who advocated for a dedicated day to prioritize civic duty. Today, it serves as a powerful reminder that athletes are not only competitors on the field but also leaders and changemakers off it.
University of Tampa SAAC Group
Led by Assistant Athletic Director Jennifer Alger, the University of Tampa's SAAC continues to set a high standard for civic engagement. By organizing this beach cleanup, they not only contributed to environmental sustainability but also embodied the spirit of NCAA Civic Engagement Day—service, leadership, and unity.
This event is just one of many ways Tampa student-athletes are making a difference beyond the scoreboard. Their dedication to giving back reflects the university's broader mission to develop well-rounded individuals who are prepared to lead in all areas of life.
