Championship Central: Tampa vs. Catawba
CARY, N.C. - The University of Tampa baseball team will play for the program's seventh national championship on Saturday as it needs one win over Catawba College at the NCAA Division II Championship Series to earn its second crown in the past three years.
The Spartans and Indians will play at 3 p.m., on Saturday as Catawba needs a pair of victories to win the championship. A 7 p.m., game would follow if the Indians win the first game of the day. Catawba earned a spot in the title game with a Friday victory over Cal Poly Pomona, setting up a matchup between the top two teams in the nation according to the recent national poll. In the Collegiate Baseball Lineup poll, UT stands at No. 1, as Catawba is No. 2.
The South Region champions own a 42-13 overall record as the champions of the Southeast Region stand at 47-14.
Tampa has won six national championships in its history, capturing the crown in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2006, 2007 and 2013. The latter three were won by head coach Joe Urso.
