PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team (7-0) defeated the University of West Florida Argonauts (2-3) in the first of three games Friday evening by a final score of 5-3 in 10 innings.
This was the Spartans' second straight game that went extra innings and their 10th straight victory in such games dating back to the 2013 season.
Michael Calkins started and went 6 1/3 innings, striking out four and allowing one run on four hits. Chris McCormick picked up the win in relief, improving to 2-0 on the season, pitching the final 1 2/3 scoreless frames with two hits allowed.
Kevin Santa (2-for-4), Laz Rivera (2-for-5) and Adrian Chacon (3-for-4) each had multiple hits on the night. Santa provided the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the 10th inning, one of two doubles and part of three RBI on the night for him.
Cody deNoyelles also drove in a run with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, his second of the season. Casey Scoggins, despite finishing the day 1-for-5 with a triple, scored two of the team's five runs and contributed in the field with a diving catch in the bottom of the third.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow afternoon for game two of three against West Florida with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 P.M. eastern time.
