TAMPA, Fla. – The top seed University of Tampa Spartans faced off against the fourth seed Delta State University Statesmen on the second day of the NCAA South Regional Tournament. The two teams battled throughout the day with DSU pulling out a 7-5 victory. Following the loss, Tampa drops to 41-9 and Delta State moves to 40-15 following the victory.
The Statesmen jumped on the board first in the top of the first inning as they produced a run on an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Spartans would respond in the bottom of the third inning when they pushed across three runs in the frame. Matt Piatt started the inning off with a single to the third baseman. Casey Scoggins would then reach on a fielding error by the pitcher. The bases would the become loaded when Laz Rivera singled out to right field. J.D. Osborne would dive in the first two runs of the game for UT, as he singled to left field to drive in Piatt and Scoggins. Rivera would then score the third run of the inning after a throwing error by the second baseman.
In the fourth inning, DSU would tack on a run on a sacrifice fly out. UT would then add another run in the bottom of the fourth when Chris Gaffney scored from second on an RBI single by Piatt.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tampa would add back a run when Gaffney hit a bases-loaded groundout to the third baseman and Osborne scored on a throwing error to make the game 7-5. Tampa would also have the bases loaded in the inning with the tying run on second base, but DSU was able to induce an inning-ending double play to end the Tampa threat.
The Spartans had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to tie the game up as they dropped the contest 7-5.
Christopher Williams got the start on the mound for UT, as the righty went six innings allowing four runs in the no decision.
Michael Calkins came in from the bullpen, as he allowed three runs and was dealt the loss to move his record to 3-4.
Conner Andrews threw the final two innings allowing only one hit and allowing no runs in the outing.
Tampa will be back in action tomorrow morning as they play against the University of West Georgia at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game.
