Spartans Win Game One Over the Eagles

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans battled the Embry-Riddle Eagles in the first game of the weekend series and came out victorious over the Spartans


Final: No. 1 Tampa Spartans 7, Embry-Riddle 2

Records: Tampa (20-6), Embry-Riddle (8-19)

All-time Series: Tampa leads the all-time series with a 8-6 record over the Eagles.

How it happened

  • The Eagles came out scoring a run in the top of the first inning to take the lead. 
  • The Spartans scored their first run after J.D. Osborne doubled down the right field line and then scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. 
  • The Spartans score again in the bottom of the sixth on a home run to left field by Darren Miller. Vin Cosenzo came up to bat next and singled to second base and advanced to second after Connor Crile hit a double down the right field line. The Spartans would take the lead after DiLacqua hit a sacrifice fly and scored Cosenzo. Kevin Santa came in to pinch hit for Chris Gaffney and singled to second base, bringing Crile across home plate and increasing their lead to 4-2. 
  • The bottom of the seventh was plagued by throwing errors by the Eagles and the Spartans were able to score three runs.
  •  The Spartans went on to win 7-2 over the Eagles. 

Inside the Stats

  • Crile went 2-2 with a double and one run. 
  • Santa went 1-2 with one RBI. 
  • Garrett Cave earned the win after pitching for seven innings and recorded eight strikeouts.

Beyond the Box

  • Miller hit his seventh homerun of the season.
  • Cave improves to 4-1 on the season.
