Tampa Suffers Setback in Series Opener

LAKELAND, Fla.. – The No. 5 University of Tampa baseball dropped game one against Florida Southern in the Sunshine State Conference rivalry series. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: Florida Southern Moccasins 8, No. 5 Tampa Spartans 7

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Yorvis Torrealba led off the inning with a walk followed by a Drew Ehrhard home run. Danny Sirven follows with his own home run. T1 | 3-0 Tamoa
  • Danny Blair led off the inning with a triple to left center. Torrealba scored Blair on a single up the middle. Torrealba scored on a fielder choice. T2 | 5-0 Tampa
  • Florida Southern answered with four runs in the bottom half.  B2 | 5-4 Tampa
  • Ehrhard reached on a double to left field. Sirven followed with a walk. Sam Freitas smoked a double down the left field line scoring Ehrhard. T4 | 6-4 Tampa
  • The Mocs had another four-run inning to take the lead. B4 | 8-6 Florida Southern
  • Blair hit his second triple of the game followed by a sac fly by Nick Detringo. T7 | 8-7 Florida Southern

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Peralta threw 4.1 scoreless innings of relief with a career-high 11 strikeouts.
  • Ehrhard went 3-5 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Blair finished 3-5 with two runs scored and two triples.
  • Keven Pimentel earned the start but departed in the second inning.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:

  • At 17-11 in the SSC, UT now needs a Saturday sweep at FSC to earn a tie with Nova Southeastern and Eckerd. A fourth team, Embry-Riddle, could also match NSU and EC at 19-11 in league play with a Saturday doubleheader sweep.
  • Peralta reached a career high with 11 strikeouts out of the pen.
  • Ehrhard hit his second home run of the season and was a triple short of the cycle.
  • Sirven hit his sixth home run of the season.

UP NEXT:

The Spartans complete their road series at Florida Southern with a double-header tomorrow. Game One is set for a 3:00 PM start time.
