Tampa Baseball Partners with USF to Support League of Their Own Community Event
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa baseball team joined forces with the University of South Florida baseball program this past weekend to participate in a community engagement event with A League of Their Own Tampa, offering instruction, encouragement and memorable experiences for local youth athletes. The event brought both collegiate teams together to share their love of the game while supporting inclusive opportunities for children with disabilities.
A League of Their Own Tampa is a community-focused organization dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enjoy and participate in sports. Inspired by the belief that everyone deserves a chance to play, compete, and connect, the group organizes adaptive baseball experiences, social events, and skill-building activities in a supportive environment
Student-athletes and coaches from both the Spartans and the Bulls provided hands-on baseball instruction, participated alongside A League of Their Own athletes in drills and scrimmages, and shared one-on-one mentorship throughout the morning prior to the Spartans and Bulls facing off for a fall season scrimmage. The collaborative atmosphere emphasized camaraderie, compassion and the power of sports to bring people together.
"We are extremely proud to be part of this event and to support and be part of A League of Their Own's mission," says Tampa head coach Joe Urso. "Our players understand that being part of a team means more than competing on the field. This was an opportunity to give back, to connect, and to make sure every athlete feels valued in the game we all love."
The University of Tampa baseball program is one of the most storied NCAA programs and most successful in NCAA Division II history. The Spartans own an NCAA Division II record 10 national championships, including seven under Urso's leadership. With a culture rooted in excellence on and off the field, the program remains committed to community involvement, character development and service alongside athletic achievement.
"Our program strives to develop complete student-athletes," Urso adds. "Days like today reinforce what makes this sport special. It was an honor to stand alongside USF in supporting these incredible people."
The event reinforced ongoing efforts by both universities to strengthen community relationships while providing meaningful outreach experiences for their student-athletes. The Spartans look forward to continuing their involvement with A League of Their Own in future seasons.
Tampa took a 4-1 victory over USF in the 7-inning scrimmage that followed.
