No. 2 Tampa Opens Quest for Historic Third Straight National Championship Saturday in Cary
CARY, N.C. – The University of Tampa baseball team returns to the national stage this weekend with history on the line.
The Spartans begin play at the 2026 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Bentley University at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Tampa enters the championship series as the tournament's No. 2 seed and is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive NCAA Division II national championship.
Already the winningest program in NCAA Division II baseball history with 10 national championships, Tampa now has an opportunity to become the first Division II program to capture three straight national titles.
The road back to Cary has become a familiar one for the Spartans, who are making another appearance among the nation's final eight teams after winning national championships in both 2024 and 2025.
The 2026 championship field features several familiar contenders, including No. 4 Central Missouri, which faced Tampa in last season's national championship series. No. 5 UT Tyler returns to Cary for the second consecutive season, while No. 3 Catawba and Point Loma each continue recent national tournament success. UIndy also returns to Cary for the third time in the last four seasons, while No. 1 West Chester seeks its third national title in program history.
Bentley, meanwhile, makes its first-ever appearance in Cary and opens tournament play against the two-time defending national champions.
Tampa enters the championship series with a 46-8 overall record and a 27-3 mark in Sunshine State Conference play. The Spartans have won eight consecutive games entering the national championships and remain unbeaten in NCAA Tournament play this postseason.
The Spartans once again feature one of the top pitching staffs in Division II baseball, posting a 2.97 team ERA while holding opponents to a .232 batting average this season. Tampa's staff has struck out 461 batters across 475 innings pitched.
Leading the way are two of the nation's premier starting pitchers in B.J. Bailey and Robert Satin. Bailey enters Cary with a perfect 13-0 record and a 2.08 ERA, striking out 100 batters over 103.2 innings pitched. Satin owns a 12-2 record with a 2.53 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 103.1 innings.
The duo ranks among the nation's leaders in multiple pitching categories and anchors a deep Tampa pitching staff that also includes standout relievers Luke Fikar and Sammy Beir. Fikar has recorded seven saves with a 1.82 ERA, while Beir owns a 1.37 ERA and three saves.
Offensively, Tampa continues to produce one of the most balanced lineups in the country. The Spartans are batting .313 as a team with 61 home runs and 452 runs scored through 54 games.
Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year Jhoander Irigoyen leads the offense with a .377 batting average, 11 home runs and 62 RBI. Brayden Woodburn is hitting .375 with 67 runs scored and 19 stolen bases, while Jordan Evans is batting .361 with 79 hits, 65 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. Jake Books has added 18 doubles and 49 RBI this season.
Tampa opened the season by winning 17 of its first 18 games and later swept nationally-ranked Rollins on the road in April. The Spartans closed the regular season by winning seven of their final eight conference games before advancing through both the NCAA South Regional and Super Regional rounds without a postseason loss.
