Rashad Callaway Leads Group Of Spartans On All-SSC Team
ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Tampa's Rashad Callaway and Anthony Griffis were among the student-athletes named to the 2010-11 All-Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Team.
Callaway was a first-team selection while Griffis earned a spot on the second team. Stefon Barfield was also recognized on the all-freshman team.
Rollins' Nick Wolf was selected Player of the Year, while his coach, Tom Klusman, was tabbed Coach of the Year. Barry's Willie Whitfield was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Saint Leo's Nate Johnson was the Freshman of the Year.
Joining Callaway, Wolf and Whitfield on the all-SSC first team were Rion Rayfield (Florida Southern) and Justin Sedlak (Florida Tech).
Earning all-SSC second team recognition were Griffis, Alex Gynes (Nova Southeastern), Chris Hall (Lynn), Brandon Jenkins (Florida Southern), and Matt Robertson (Rollins).
Two players, John Harper (Eckerd) and Terry Jenkins (Florida Southern), also earned honorable mention.
Receiving all-freshman recognition with Barfield and Johnson were Alex Bodney (Eckerd), Derrick Bolanos (Barry) and Trip McFall (Rollins).
Callaway, a senior from Bayonne, N.J., earned his third straight first-team all-SSC selection as he led the Spartans in scoring (19.5 ppg), assists (86), steals (31), 3-point field goals (36) and free throws (104) in 16 SSC games.
Griffis, a junior, led the conference with an .885 free throw percentage and averaged 16.6 points per contest in league play. He also shot .459 from the field while starting all 16 games.
Barfield played in eight SSC games and found a spot in the Spartan starting lineup during the stretch run.
Voting for the All-SSC team was conducted among the league's men's basketball coaches and sports information directors.
