Tampa Men's Basketball Announces Class of 2012 Signings
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's basketball program has announced that two student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend UT. The pair will enroll in the fall of 2012.
Head coach Richard Schmidt has received signatures from Vincent Cornu (Bieville, France) and Austin Rettig (Dallas, Texas).
"We are excited about these additions and expect to see great things from this class," says Schmidt. "I expect both guys to be players who can come in and contribute from the beginning. They have the caliber to come in and start for us, which is the expectation they carry. We like the looks of this class and are excited about the future of this program."
Vincent Cornu - 6-8 - 230 - F - Bieville, France - Labette Community College
As a Freshman: Attended Labette Community College in Kansas…Played in 26 games, averaging 7.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game…Helped team to a 20-win season…Shot 69 percent from the field and also finished with 15 blocked shots…Scored a season-high 17 points with five rebounds against Fort Scott Community College (2/1)…Also tallied 17 points while registering a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds versus Frank Phillips College (11/18).
High School: Attended Jeanne D'arc High School in France, playing for coach Boutruche…Averaged 17.3 points and 9.8 rebounds…Ranked by various recruiting publications as a low-to-mid major prospect…Also played club basketball for Caen Basket Club, averaging 12 points and nine rebounds.
Personal: Son of Jean-Luc and Estelle Cornu…Has a sister (Charlotte) and two brothers (Francois and Edoard)…Business administration major…Birthdate: 2/14/1990.
Schmidt on Cornu: "Vincent is big, strong, and tough. He gets a hand on every rebound and runs rim to rim. He'll be a real difference-maker in our frontcourt."
Austin Rettig - 6-5 - 210 - G - Dallas, Texas - Prestonwood Christian Academy
High School: Attended Prestonwood Christian Academy where he played for head coach Chris Mayberry…Ranked by ESPNU as the No. 39 prospect in the state of Texas…Was a second-team all-district performer who led team to TAPPS Division 1-5A state title…Prestonwood was ranked as a consensus national top-10 program, including a No. 8 ranking in the final USA Today Super 25 poll…Selected to play in several all-star games, including Showboat Classic, City of Palms, Beach Ball Classic, Hoophall Classic, Bagg Insurance Invitational and Thanksgiving Hoopfest…Helped team to title at City of Palms…Played club basketball for Deron Williams Elite, playing for coach Preston Hatcher…Team won the Fab 48 in Las Vegas.
Personal: Will graduate from high school Cum Laude…Was also recognized for perfect attendance…Volunteered with Team Conner Children's Cancer…Son of Duane and Kay Rettig…Has two older sisters, Brittani and Kortani…Finance major, business administration minor…Birthdate: 3/2/1994.
Schmidt on Rettig: "Austin doesn't know how to do anything but win. He should make an immediate impact on our program. We're very excited to have such a well-rounded student-athlete join the Spartan family."
