Spartans Claim Home Opener Versus Fire
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans (1-2) welcomed the Southeastern University Fire (2-2) to the Bob Martinez Athletics Center for the first home game of the 2014-15 season. The Spartans and Fire played a close game as the Spartans came out on top by a final score of 82-74.
The first half of the ball game was a back and forth affair, as the Spartans and Fire played to nine lead changes. Southeastern was able to push up their first half lead to nine points with just 4:40 left in the first half. Tampa was then went on a 13-2 run to end the half, and take a 39-37 lead.
Jordan Davis and Eugene McCrory were able to register 13 points a piece in the opening half for the Spartans.
The second half followed the same flow as the first half, as both teams traded baskets throughout the half. Southeastern was holding a 66-65 lead with 6:55 left to play in the game, when Tiant McCoy hit a three-pointer to give the Spartans the lead at 68-66. After Southeastern tied the game back at 68 with 6:01 left on the clock, Austin Rettig threw down a monstrous dunk that gave UT the lead for good.
Eugene McCrory lead all scorers on the night with 29 points, as he shot 13-17 from the field, and 3-4 from the free-throw line. McCrory also added seven rebounds. Austin Rettig and Davis each contributed with double digits as they put up 18 and 16 respectively. Davis also added six assists and six rebounds on the night.
The Spartans return to action on November 25, when they host Armstrong at 7:30 p.m., at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center.
