Spartans Tame Lions
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans traveled north to take on a Sunshine State Conference foe, the Saint Leo Lions. Tampa used a dominating defensive performance in the second half, to defeat the Lion 65-57.
Tampa improves to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in SSC play, while Saint Leo drops to 12-14 and 4-10 in conference play. The victory give UT the season series sweep over SLU.
Senior Jordan Davis led the way for the Spartans, as he racked up 19 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Sophomore Austin Rettig and senior Eugene McCrory each added double-digit points with 12 and 10 respectively.
As a team, UT shot 23-50 (46%) from the field, while limiting Saint Leo to 18-47 (38.3%)
After going into the halftime trailing 33-32, Tampa started the second half with a 13-4 run over the first 5:23 to take a 47-37 lead. The Spartans would never look back as they never relinquished the lead. On the defense side, UT held SLU to 7-24 (29.2%) from the field.
Tampa will be back in action on Saturday, as they welcome in the Rollins College Tars. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
