Undefeated Spartans Claim Both SSC Weekly Honors
WINTER, PARK, Fla. - Following a victory over its rival in its Sunshine State Conference opener, the University of Tampa men's lacrosse team received more recognition as Conor Whipple and Marty Heyn were recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Players of the Week presented by VALIC.
Conor Whipple, a freshman attackman from Tampa, Fla., began the week scoring his sixth hat trick of the season with three goals and two assists for five points for the No. 6 Spartans in a 27-3 win against Lees-McRae. He scored the opening goal of the game and then assisted on the next two.
Whipple followed that performance with two goals and four assists for six points against SSC foe Florida Southern in a 12-6 victory. He finished the week with five goals and six assists for 11 points.
Heyn, a sophomore defensaman from Gaithersburg, Md., helped anchor the No. 6 Spartans defensive efforts in holding Lees-McRae to just three goals, none in the first half, in a 27-3 victory. Heyn helped shut down Lees-McRae, allowing them to record just16 shots, including only one shot in the first and fourth quarters. Heyn record an assist in the win.
Against Florida Southern, Heyn helped hold the Moccasins to their lowest goal total (6) of the season in a 12-6 victory. He caused three turnovers and collected on ground ball in the win.
