No. 6 Spartans Double Up Griffins In Early Week Contest
The University of Tampa men's lacrosse team defeated the Chestnut Hill College 12-6 Tuesday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic Complex.
TAMPA, Fla. - The Univesity of Tampa men's lacrosse team faced off with the Chestnut Hill College Griffins Tuesday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic Complex and came out on top by a score of 12-6.
Tampa's offense was led by Conor Whipple, who netted four goals and tallied two assists in the matchup. Adding to his totals on the year, Andrew Kew showed up on the stat sheet by registering a goal of his own giving the freshman 21 goals on the season. Providing additional firepower were Matt Bilak, and Jake Schmidt, who notched two goals each.
Defensively, UT nearly doubled CHC in the battle for groundballs 32-18. Anchoring down the Spartans defense was Charlie Cummins, who hauled in five groundballs on the day and forced two caused turnovers. Also putting up impressive numbers on the defensive end was Zayne Smith, who scooped up four groundballs. Senior Ryan Vella also managed to force two caused turnovers in critical moments of the game.
At the faceoff x Alex Patton earned a faceoff win percentage of .850, converting on 17 of 20 attempts in the contest. Patton also went on to collect nine groundballs putting his total for the season at 23.
Earning the victory between the pipes for Tampa was A.J. Arnold, who posted a save percentage of .625 while facing 16 shots. Arnold pulled in 10 saves on the day en route to his first win of the year earning a record of 1-0.
When asked about his team's performance head coach Rory Whipple said " This was a good win for us, the offense put up 10 goals, and the defense did a phenomenal job on shutting down Chestnut Hill in the second half."
Following the victory UT improves to 4-1 on the season. The No.6 Spartans return to action Saturday, as they host the Lake Erie College Storm at the Naimoli Family Athletic Complex, game time is set for 1 P.M.
