Ingvarsson’s Two Goals Lead Spartans Over Mocs
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 10 University of Tampa Spartans collected their seventh consecutive win on Friday night with a 4-1 victory over Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College in Lakeland. The win brings the Spartans' record to 13-2-1 overall, 5-2 in league play, while the Moccasins drop to 3-11, 2-5 in the SSC.
Following a Florida Southern foul in the ninth minute, Tampa defender Dan Ingvarsson shot a direct free kick past Florida Southern goalkeeper Paul DiPalma to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, Lister Warren kicked a pass from Tampa's leading point-getter Pascal Milien into the back of the net to increase the lead to two. Freshman Ryan Griffin was also credited with an assist.
The Moccasins threatened to score in the first half, but a kick save by defender Zach Fraser on the goal line and a save by goalkeeper Ryan Thompson kept them off the board.
After Milien was fouled inside the box by DiPalma early in the second half, Ingvarsson notched his second goal of the game when he beat DiPalma with the penalty kick to put the Spartans up 3-0.
The Spartans outshot Florida Southern 24-7 in a game that featured eight cautions to the Moccasins and one red card. The Moccasins did score late in the game when Dennie Townsend shot the ball past Thompson, but it wouldn't be enough as sophomore Andrej Gulan added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to close out the scoring at 4-1.
DiPalma finished the game with eight saves while Thompson finished with one to pick up the win.
The Spartans will conclude their regular season at home against
Florida Tech on Wednesday at 7 pm.
