Spartans Back On Track With 3-1 Win Over Nova Southeastern
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (7-4, 2-2 SSC) men's soccer team halted a two-game skid with a 3-1 triumph over Nova Southeastern University (4-4-2, 0-4 SSC). The Sunshine State Conference meeting was played at UT's Pepin Stadium.
Scoreless for the first 31 minutes, Tampa's Kemal Malcolm accounted for the lone goal of the first half as he scored on a short pass from Greg Sasser.
UT knocked in a pair of goals in the second half to grab a commanding 3-0 advantage with the first coming on a Ryan Griffin penalty kick in the 57th minute. Andrej Gulan then took a pass from teammate David Gulec and beat a Nova defender for the final Spartan goal at 66:19. NSU had a Matthew Ilter goal at 76:01 to account for its only score.
Clete Goddard started in goal for the Spartans and turned in a magnificent showing with six saves on the evening. He now moves to 1-0 on the year. Tampa outshot Nova 16-12 as each team tallied seven shots on goal.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as it welcomes No. 24 Clayton State University. The game with the 9-1 Lakers will kick-off at 7 p.m. and will also mark Armed Forces Day for UT. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
