Spartan Men and Women on Top After Record Setting Day Two
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 8 University of Tampa men's swimming team added a pair of school records on day two of the Shark Invitational as the No. 11 Spartan women moved into sole possession of first place at the midway point of the four-day event.
In a meet hosted by Sunshine State Conference opponent Nova Southeastern University, the UT men now have 862.5 points, leading Florida Southern (700.5), Nova Southeastern (537), Florida Tech (283) and Saint Leo (246).
In women's action, Tampa now has 690.5 points to place ahead of Florida International (622), Florida Southern (578), Nova Southeastern (417.5) and Lynn (168). A total of 10 teams are competing on the women's side, with eight men's squads.
After setting a school record in the 200 Medley Relay on Saturday, the Spartan men added two more school records in relay events on Sunday.
The first school record of the day came in the 200 Free Relay as the time of 1:20.77 also represented an NCAA "A" cut time. The record-setting group included Khalid Aldaboos, Martin Hammer, Runar Borgen and Jeremy Parker. UT also posted a "B" time in a fifth-place finish from Karl Burdis, Jordan Augier, Damen Pheiffer and Derek Krell.
UT's men achieved the second school record of the night, and third of the tournament, in the final event of the day. The 400 Medley Relay team of Burdis, Philip Nordenberg, Borgen and Hammer was clocked at 3:16.20, which was also an NCAA "B" time. Tampa was also second in the event as Augier, Danny Duhig, Aldaboos and Parker finished in 3:22.41.
Tampa's women opened the evening with a second-place finish in the 200 Free Relay, posting an NCAA "B" cut time. The team of Erin Plachy, Emily Grams, Marisa Barton and Heather Glenday finished in 1:36.33.
In the first individual event of the night, Alex Hipolito was second overall with a "B" time in the 400 IM. Hipolito was clocked at 4:24.76.
Zane Hranac also netted a "B" time in the men's version of the 400 IM, coming in at 3:59.50.
Hipolito was one of three Spartans with "B" times in the 100 Fly, joined by Grams and Catherine Parker. The UT swimmers placed fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
Borgen was third overall in the men's 100 Fly, as Aldaboos was fifth. Both posted times that qualified as "B" cuts.
In the 200 Free, Glenday was second with a time of 1:50.69. The "B" time was one of two for Tampa as Briana Murphy also met NCAA standards.
Pheiffer led a trio of UT swimmers in the 200 Free, as each recorded "B" times. He was second overall while teammates Parker and Scott Nocco also qualified.
Tampa occupied the second and third spots with "B" times in the women's 400 Medley Relay as the team of Allison Noe, Hipolito, Parker and Glenday was second with a time of 3:51.94. The group of Morgan Jones, Lisa Bero, Grams and Plachy were clocked at 3:54.35.
Monday's prelims are scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 5 p.m. Live video will be available through NSUSharks.com.
