Tampa on Top Heading to Final Day of Shark Invitational
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 8 University of Tampa men's swimming team added its fourth school record of the tournament at the Shark Invitational. The No. 11 Spartan women also remain in sole possession of first place with one day left in the four-day competition.
In a meet hosted by Sunshine State Conference opponent Nova Southeastern University, the UT men now have 1,313.5 points, leading Florida Southern (1,044.5), Nova Southeastern (807.5), Florida Tech (453.5) and Saint Leo (296).
In women's action, Tampa now has 1,006.5 points to place ahead of Florida International (931), Florida Southern (868), Nova Southeastern (613.5) and Rollins (231). A total of 10 teams are competing on the women's side, with eight men's squads.
The fourth school relay record of the tournament for Tampa's men came in the 800 Free Relay as the team of Runar Borgen, Damen Pheiffer, Jeremy Parker and Martin Hammer were clocked at a "B" cut effort of 6:37.71. UT also placed a second team with a "B" cut in the race as Danny Duhig, Derek Krell, Max Coulls and Scott Nocco finished fourth.
Heather Glenday started off the night with a second-place finish and NCAA "B" time in the 500 Free. Her time was clocked at 4:56.51. Teammate Briana Murphy finished fourth, posting a "B" provisional time as well.
Karl Burdis turned in a first-place finish in the 100 Back, registering a "B" time of 48.83. Runar Borgen also netted a "B" time with a sixth-place finish. In the men's 500 Free, Jonathan Hofrichter recorded a fifth-place finish, logging a "B" cut.
In the women's 100 Breast, senior Alex Hipolito was second with a "B" time of 1:04.62. In the men's 100 Breast, UT occupied three of the top four spots as Philip Nordenberg won the race with a "B" time of 55.87. Nocco finished second as Duhig was fourth.
The 200 Fly included a pair of NCAA "B" times for the Spartan women as Catherine Parker and Cat Patrell were third and fourth respectively.
Zane Hranac added another first-place performance for Tampa's men, winning the 200 Fly with a time of 1:48.58. His time was good for an NCAA "B" cut.
Tampa's women also won the 800 Free Relay, posting a time of 7:31.85. The "B" time was registered by Hipolito, Erin Plachy, Briana Murphy and Glenday.
Prelims on the final day are scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 4 p.m. Live video will be available through NSUSharks.com.
