Tampa Earns Doubleheader Split With Hillsdale
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (18-5) softball team dropped game one of a doubleheader versus Hillsdale, Mich., College (6-6) by a score of 2-1, but salvaged the split with a 4-0 win in the second game.
In game one, each team benefited from an unearned run before Hillsdale struck with the game-winning run in their half of the sixth. Freshman Becky Vyzas was a perfect 3-3 at the plate as she accounted for 3 of UT's five hits.
Heather Van Landingham started for the Spartans and suffered the loss. She moves to 6-2 on the year as she allowed just one earned run in five innings of work. Deanna Henriott pitched two perfect innings in relief, striking out six Chargers.
Henriott continued her domination in game two, allowing just one hit while registering the complete game shutout. A bunt single in the third was all the Hillsdale bats could muster as Henriott had 13 strikeouts while improving to 11-3 on the year.
Vyzas capped off a perfect day with another 3-3 effort at the plate as she also reached base on a walk. Ashley Arcuri, Michele Horan and Jessica Keefe each collected two hits for Tampa at the plate.
Tampa now travels to Boca Raton for a three game series with Lynn University in a Sunshine State Conference matchup. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. Tampa will offer live stats through www.tampaspartans.com.
