Spartans Squeak Past Sharks To Earn Conference Win
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla - The University of Tampa softball team was able to silence the Nova Southeastern University Sharks in a 2-1 victory over the No. 23 Sharks. With the win, the Spartans move to 9-8 (1-2 SSC) while the Sharks fall to 22-7 (2-1 SSC).
Heather Van Landingham entered the seventh without allowing a hit For Tampa. Laura Saladrigas ended the bid with a single up the middle.
After a couple of walks and a crucial error, the Sharks were able split the lead, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Spartans threatened in the sixth after a walk issued to Becky Vyzas and a Brittany Hipple double.
After another free pass issued to Jessica Tejas, Cassie Barnes was able to put the Spartans on the board. UT would tack on the deciding run thanks to an Ashley Carrea sacrifice fly scoring pinch-runner Shannon Kelly.
Vyzas contributed to the offense with a double while Carrea scattered two hits throughout the contest.
The Spartans are set to take on Francis Marion University on Thursday. The doubleheader is set to start at noon at The University of Tampa Softball Complex. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
