Late Inning Surge Sends Spartans To Victory
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team earned a Sunshine State Conference victory Friday night, defeating visiting Lynn University by plating a pair of runs in its last at-bat to secure a 2-0 win. With the triumph the Red, Black & Gold advance to 11-9 (2-2 SSC) while the Fighting Knights falls to 15-13 (1-3 SSC).
The Spartans scored the game's only runs in the sixth inning thanks to two critical errors.
Freshman Brittany Dattilo started off the inning with an infield single. Julie Wisniewski then reached on a throwing error courtesy of the catcher, sending Dattilo to third. Dattilo proceeded to score on a second catcher's error. The Spartans then added to the lead when Wisniewski scored courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Susan Jallo.
Heather Van Landingham earned her fifth win of the season, pitching the distance and recording eight strikeouts. In blanking the Fighting Knights Van Landingham picked up her third shutout on the year.
Brittany Hipple and Jessica Tejas also contributed with a hit apiece.
The series continue on Saturday with a double feature. Game
times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.Live stats
