Henriott’s No-Hitter Helps Spartans In Sweep Over Hillsdale
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team posted a series sweep over the visiting Hillsdale College Chargers taking the first game of a double-header by an 8-0 score in five innings while posting a 4-1 score during the second meeting. The Spartans improve to 25-3 on the year as the Chargers drop to 3-6.
The first meeting was paced by Tampa's pitching ace, Deanna Henriott throwing a no-hitter to grasp her third of the year. Henriott was tagged with win while striking out nine Chargers to improve her overall record to 16-1.
Tampa appeared on the board to begin during the second inning following a score by Cassie Barnes courtesy of a triple to right center by senior Brittany Joseph to show 1-0 on the board.
Susan Jallo recorded a run in the third before Tampa rallied off six scores in the fourth inning to push the lead to 8-0. Katlyn Raatz led off the Spartans in the inning and did not shy away from the challenge to start the push off with a double to left field. Barnes and Jallo also recorded doubles in the inning to grasp the first win of a two-game series.
Six Spartans recorded runs in game one as Joseph, Jallo and Barnes all recorded two RBI. Barnes came away with a team leading three hits as Becky Vyzas followed with two.
Kari Walsh took the Spartans' momentum into the second game from the circle and recorded four strike outs to push her overall record to 9-2. Both teams stepped up its defensive game as a run did not appear on the board until the fourth inning.
With bases loaded, Julie Wisniewski contributed to putting the Spartans on the scoreboard following a sac fly to right field to bring in Joseph as Jallo followed with a single to center field sending Chelsey Brooks and Raatz around the bases to push the score to 3-0.
The Chargers answered the following batting round with a run by Teresa Patterson to mark the board at 3-1 but would be answered by a Raatz triple that ultimately would let her score after a throwing error.
Jallo recorded two RBI in the second game while coming away with a team-best two hits.
Tampa will take the field again Wednesday, March 23rd at 6 p.m. to play host to Webber International for another double-header series.
