Tampa Represented In Final NFCA Softball Poll
STARKVILLE, Miss. - For the first time in program history, The University of Tampa softball team is represented in the final NFCA Division II poll, claiming the No. 23 spot in the final installment.
The Spartans have now been tabbed in 12 consecutive releases, representing a program-record for most consecutive appearances in the coaches poll. Tampa has now been ranked in the top-25 in three of the last four seasons.
After finishing the season with a 39-9 overall record, Tampa established a new school record for victories and opened the season with 12 consecutive victories, also a program first. Head coach Leslie Kanter's squad also set a record for the best start in program history, going 15-1.
The Spartans finished second in the Sunshine State Conference with a 19-5 league showing. UT also advanced to the NCAA South Regional where it opened competition with a 3-2 victory over the University of Arkansas-Monticello.
While competing in arguable the toughest region in NCAA Division II, Tampa is among six South Region schools in the final rankings, joining Alabama Huntsville (2), Valdosta State (12), West Alabama (14), Rollins (16) and Arkansas-Monticello (24).
Looking ahead to the 2012 season, UT departs four starters and a member of its pitching rotations, but will welcome back each of its three all-South Region performers. Among the returnees are record-setting pitcher Deanna Henriott, leading hitter Becky Vyzas and all-around star Susan Jallo.
