Spartans Sweep Double-Header in Rain Drenched Sunday
CLERMONT, Fla. - The No. 24 University of Tampa (12-3) softball team swept a double-header Sunday afternoon against University of Mary (3-4) and Wilmington University (1-1) by scores of 3-2 and 8-0, respectively.
Senior Deanna Henriott started and earned the win for the Spartans to improve her record to 7-2. She hurled 7.0 innings with 17 strikeouts and was tagged with two earned runs.
Tampa scored one run early in the third inning when Meagan Burke lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Susan Jallo for the first run of the game.
In the seventh inning with UT trailing two to one, Tampa rallied for two runs. Kayleen Boatwright and Burke each contributed RBI base hits during the inning. Boatwright finished with three hits and one RBI, while Burke had one hit with two RBI.
Game two was started by sophomore Kayla Cox, which ended in six innings. She improved her record to 6-1 by throwing 6.0 innings with 13 strikeouts and two hits allowed.
The Spartans were active on offense in the second game, as 10 different batters each recorded base hits. Stacy Piagno and Jallo contributed greatly to the effort. Jallo had three base hits and one run scored, while Piagno had two hits and three RBI.
Pinch-hitter Megan Paul ended the game on a walk-off single to right center, which would finalize the game at a ten to zero score.
