Spartans Sweep Series Against SSC Foe, Lynn University
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 21 University of Tampa (16-3, 3-0 SSC) defeated Lynn University (1-21, 0-3 SSC) in both games of the afternoon double-header at Vince Naimoli Softball Field on Saturday.
In the first game, Kayla Cox started and earned the win, as Tampa defeated Lynn by a score of 8 to 0 in five innings. Cox threw 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts and no hits allowed to mark her second no-hitter of the season and the second no-hitter by Tampa in the series.
On offense, the Spartans had two big rallies in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Tampa scored three runs, while four runs were scored in the fourth.
Katlyn Raatz and Kayleen Boatwright were the top performers for UT. Raatz finished with two base hits and five RBI, and Boatwright had two base hits and two RBI.
Senior Deanna Henriott started the second game, and UT defeated Lynn by a score of 4 to 0. She improved her record to 9-2 by tossing 7.0 innings of shutout softball with nine strikeouts.
Spartan pitchers, Cox and Henriott, went through a 16.2 inning stretch of no hit softball, dating back to the game against Wilmington (02/26/2012).
Tampa was able to muster one run through five innings, until Boatwright cleared a bases loaded situation with a double to left center in the sixth. She finished the game with two base hits and four RBI.
The Spartans next games will be on the road at Clermont, Fla. on Tuesday when they will take on Post and Georgian Court in a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
