Spartans Tell the Storey, Beat Bucs
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The No. 12 University of Tampa (27-4, 12-1 SSC) softball team opened up the weekend series with a win by a score of 2-1 in nine innings against Sunshine State Conference (SSC) opponent No. 4 Barry University (30-6, 11-2 SSC) at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.
Senior Deanna Henriott started and earned the win for the Spartans, as she improved her record 16-3. The native of Saint Petersburg, Fla. tossed 9.0 innings with 12 strikeouts and one unearned run allowed.
The Spartans were down 1-0 in the top of the seventh because of a costly error on a Buccaneer stolen base in the fourth inning, until the offensive hero of the game, Taylor Storey, delivered a two-out single to left field to score Becky Vyzas.
Storey came up big again in the top of the ninth, when she drilled a base hit to center to bring in base-runner Meagan Burke. Storey finished the game with two base hits and two RBI.
Tampa will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they will play the Buccaneers in a double-header starting at noon. Live stats will be available through tampaspartans.com.
