Spartans Walk-off Victorious in Home Opener
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 7 University of Tampa (12-2, 1-0 SSC) softball team claimed a 1-0 victory over Florida Tech (9-11, 0-1 SSC) Friday evening at Vince Naimoli Field in a game that featured a walk-off and another historic outing for Kayla Cox.
Kayla Cox started in the circle for the Spartans and recorded her ninth victory of the season. The junior tossed 7.0 innings with 15 strikeouts while allowing no hits. The no-hitter was the 20th in Spartan history and seventh of her career. Cox has now thrown four no-hitters this season, including a perfect game. She improves her record to 9-1.
The Spartans scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. A throwing error by Kara Dickinson allowed Katlyn Raatz to score the winning run.
Meagan Burke had two base hits in the game, including a triple in the bottom of the first. Katie Bannon also contributed for the Spartans with a base hit.
Tampa will conclude the weekend series against Florida Tech with a double-header on Saturday with the first game starting at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
