Daktronics Tabs Kayla Cox as National Pitcher of the Year as Star Hurler Earns All-American Honors
TAMPA, Fla - One year after becoming the first University of Tampa softball player to garner first-team All-American honors, Kayla Cox has once again earned the honor while also being named the Daktronics Ron Lenz National Pitcher of the Year.
Both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and Daktronics recognized Cox on Wednesday as the teams were announced for both awards.
The only first-team All-American in program history, Cox is now a two-time honoree as she was also named the Sunshine State Conference and Daktronics South Region Pitcher of the Year. She now becomes the first national player of the year in program history.
Cox, a junior pitcher from Riverview, Fla., finished the season with a 25-6 record and 0.74 ERA. She also registered a school-record 332 strikeouts and led the Spartans to the NCAA South Regional finals in Valdosta, Ga.
The national leader in ERA, Cox held opponents to just a .115 batting average on the year as she threw seven no-hitters during the season. Cox is third in the nation in strikeouts as well.
The NFCA awards are voted on by member coaches. Daktronics,
Inc., sponsors a team, as the company is an acknowledged world
leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for
virtually every sport at every level of competition. The team
is
voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA).
