Kanter Claims 500 Wins in Doubleheader Shutout
TAMPA, Fla.-The No. 13 University of Tampa softball team dominated Adelphi University in two shutout games, 6-0 and 3-0, respectively, on Tuesday night securing coach Leslie Kanter's 500th career win. The Spartans improve their record to 15-3 while the Panthers drop to 2-4.
Game one's starting pitcher Kayla Cox threw a perfect game with 16 strikeouts in 21 batters faced improving her ERA to 0.40. Tonight's game one win marks Cox's ninth no-hitter, second perfect game, and the fifth perfect game in University of Tampa softball history.
First baseman Meagan Burke slugged a two RBI-double in the bottom of the third to put Tampa on the board bringing home pinch runner Sam Anderson and catcher Kandi Kuder. Freshman Bre Setree notched a single to put the Spartans up 3-0 at the end of the inning.
Second baseman Alyssa Colletti hit an RBI-double bringing home Setree and pinch-hitter Karlyn Buker in the fourth. Burke had a repeat double in the sixth to bring home Kuder after her triple to right-center field.
The Panthers were unable to spark an offensive stride with Cox in the circle and solid fielding all around.
Junior Julia Morrow threw game two notching nine strikeouts allowing a mere three hits.
Tampa's offense sparked early with Setree's RBI to bring home Kayleen Boatwright after her single. Setree slugged an RBI-double in the third upping the Spartan score to two.
Linsday Dring rounded the bases after three consecutive singles, finalizing the score at 3-0.
Adelphi's left fielder Niki Barbato notched two of the Panthers' hits but was unable to advance past second base.
Junior Taylor Collins' diving catch in right-center field ended the game making the milestone victory for Kanter.
Tampa returns to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. to face Barry University in Miami Gardens, Fla.
