No. 17 Spartans Take One in Saturday’s Doubleheader

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team split a doubleheader with Colorado Christian University, claiming the first matchup, 1-0, while dropping the second, 13-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Field.

The Spartans now stand at 6-1 overall while the Cougars hold a 3-8 record.

To start off the day, pitcher Julia Morrow threw her fourth complete game of the season, tossing 13 strikeouts of 23 batters faced. Morrow maintains her perfect 0.00 ERA.

The Spartans jumped on the board early as leadoff hitter, Kandi Kuder, reached home of a single by Bree Setree. The subsequent innings featured hits by Kuder, Lindsay Dring, Jenna Halper, and a second by Setree.

The Cougars notched two hits but could not convert to get on the board in the first game, completing the contest with 1-0 final score.

Bre Setree started in the circle during the second game but moved to third base as Jennie Sittloh toed the rubber for the remaining 6.1 innings.

Meagan Burke rocketed two triples to right field during the second game, bringing home Kuder and Kelsey Humphrey. Two batters later in the first, Dring slugged to the same spot earning an RBI-triple and upping the Spartans' score to two. She later added a second RBI bringing home Sabrina Cortes.

The Cougars got on the board early and maintained the lead throughout the matchup. Shortstop Stephanie Tatham had a perfect batting average for the Cougars on four hits. Three additional Cougars tallied three hits apiece.

Tampa could not overcome the explosive bats of Colorado Christian as the contest concluded with a final score of 13-4.

Tampa returns to action for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader as the Spartans take on the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Live stats as well as a video webcast will be available at www.tampaspartans.tv.
