No. 14 Tampa Splits a Pair of Games with PBA
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The No. 14 University
of Tampa softball team (7-2) split a pair of games with Palm Beach
Atlantic (6-8) at Simpson Field on Saturday afternoon by final
scores of 2-1 and 9-3 respectively.
Senior Julia Morrow took the circle for the Spartans in game one
and tossed 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts. She allowed one
unearned run on three hits and claimed her fifth victory of the
year.
Lindsay Dring gave Tampa an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first
on a two out RBI single to score Kandi Kuder.
Sahrina Cortes reached on Sailfish throwing error in the top of the
third and came around to score on a passed ball giving the Spartans
a 2-0 advantage.
Palm Beach Atlantic was unable to mount a comeback after scoring an
unearned run in the bottom of the seventh with Tampa taking the
game by a final score of 2-1.
Cortes led all Spartans with two hits in game one.
Jennie Sittloh started game two for the Spartans and suffered her
first loss of the season. She tossed 2.1 innings with three
strikeouts while allowing four runs on four hits. Bre Setree took
the mound for 0.2 innings as Morrow concluded the game pitching the
final 3.0 innings.
UT opened game two with two runs in the top of the first after
loading the bases and scoring off a PBA fielder's choice followed
by a throwing error to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Sailfish responded in the bottom half of the inning as Lindsey
Johnson was credited with an RBI groundout that plated Devin
Williams after she tripled to left field.
Tampa extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second as Kuder
belted an RBI double that scored Alyssa Colletti.
PBA rallied in the following innings as the Sailfish plated three
runs in the third and four in the fourth to take an 8-3 advantage
in the game. Palm Beach Atlantic added a run in the bottom of the
sixth for a 9-3 lead, which would be the eventual final score.
Meagan Burke and Cortes also chipped in with a base hit each for
the UT offense in game two.
