Spartans Bury Buccaneers
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (17-8,
5-5 SSC) softball team claimed a 4-2 victory over Barry University
(22-6, 6-1 SSC) at Naimoli Family Field on Saturday evening.
Senior Julia Morrow started for the Spartans and earned her
14thvictory of the season. She tossed 7.0 innings with four
strikeouts while allowing two runs on nine hits.
Barry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by
Julie Brito that scored Alayna Gallagher.
Tampa answered in the bottom of the inning as Lindsay Dring
delivered an RBI single to plate Kandi Kuder and tie the game at
1-1.
Both teams were held scoreless through the next three innings as
Morrow and Buccaneers starter Haley Wiseman dominated in the
circle.
BU reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth as Brito doubled home
Dee Espinoza for a 2-1 advantage.
The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning scoring
three runs. Kuder tied the game with an RBI double that scored
Jenna Halper. Meagan Burke gave UT the lead as the senior blasted a
two-run homer over the left field foul pole for a 4-2 lead.
Morrow and the Tampa defense held strong through the final two
innings to claim the victory.
Sahrina Cortes, Bre Setree, and Alyssa Colletti also each
contributed a base hit each to the Spartan offense to total
eight.
UT will return to action Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader at
home with Barry to conclude the SSC series with the first game
