Sweet Saturday As Spartans Sweep Tars to Win Series

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Spartans wrapped up their regular season matchup against the Rollins College Tars with a doubleheader on Saturday. In the first game, the long ball was present as both teams combined for five home runs (with three belonging to Tampa) as UT came out on top 10-4. The second game went down in a similar fashion as UT scored six runs in the first inning on its way to a 7-1 victory.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

2nd Inning: The home team went up on the scoreboard first as Kacie Booth hit a two run homerun to give the Tars a short-lived 2-0 lead.

3rd Inning: The offense got started for UT in the top half of the inning as Sahrina Cortes doubled to right-center and advanced to third on a single by Taylor Farrell. Bre Setree reached base safely on a walk. Breanna Taphouse came in as a pinch runner for Farrell. Dooley reached on a fielder's choice with Rollins getting the force out at home. Corynn Miner came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit her third home run of her freshman season, this one being her biggest one so far, as she cleared the bases with a grand slam past the fence in left field.

5th Inning: The Tars would tie the game in the bottom of the inning as catcher Abigail Sexton hit a two-run home run to center field.

6th Inning: The game would once again not last tied for very long as Tampa answered the call. Grace Street came in as a pitcher and got one quick out before Elly Pillers reached first safely on an error by the first baseman. Maddie Farrell singled to left field to put two runners on and came around to score when pinch-hitter Jennie Sittloh hit a homerun of her own to give UT a 7-4 lead and Cortes joined the home run club as she hit a solo shot to left field as well to extend the lead.  

7th Inning: UT added a pair of runs in the final inning as Pillers singled back up the middle to bring in pinch-runner Alex Walton and M.Farrell singled through the left side to bring in Dooley.

INSIDE THE STATS:

  •  Dooley moved to 4-1 on the season as she struck out four and walked just one while giving up three earned runs on eight hits across the seven innings.
  • The Spartans tagged two different Rollins pitchers with four runs each as they drew a pair of walks and did not strikeout at the plate.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  •  Tampa has now scored 10 runs in two different games this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1st Inning: The momentum from the first game of the day carried over to start this one as the Spartans put up six runs in the top half. T.Farrell drew a walk and moved to third on the next batter as Setree singled down the right field line. Dooley drove in the first run of the day with a single to left field and moved to second as Miner drew a walk to load the bases. Pillers was able to take advantage of the situation as she doubled to left-center to add two more runs. M.Farrell put two more runs on the board to make it 5-0 with just one out as she hit a double of her own. This ended the day early for Tars starting pitcher Sarah Piening and the final run of the inning came on a wild pitch as M.Farrell came home from third having advanced there on a single by Shelby Press.

In the bottom half of the inning, the home side tried to answer but was only able to put one run on the board as Hailee Keisling scored.

6th Inning: UT added one more insurance run as they looked to close out the game late. T.Farrell again drew a walk and moved to second on a single by Setree. Taphouse came in to replace Farrell as a pinch runner and came around to score as Dooley singled to right field. 

INSIDE THE STATS:

  •  The Spartans hit three doubles and drew six more walks while only striking out twice to keep the offense going. 
  • Miner spread out six hits across seven innings of work and tallied eight strikeouts while walking just one. 
  • UT left eight runners on base while RC left 10.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The team hit double figure in hits for the fifth time this season and third in the last four matches. 
  • Tampa has now hit at least one extra-base hit in six straight games.
  • UT has recorded 58 runs in 10 games and has hit seven home runs

UP NEXT:

Tampa will finally get a chance to play at home as they are scheduled to face off against the Florida Tech Panthers on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for the Spartans home opener.
