MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference announced its weekly award winners and the University of Tampa softball team was represented through Makaleigh Dooley, as she was named SSC Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week.
The senior from Wharton HS has earned SSC Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back weeks, and this is the ninth time she's received the award in her career. Dooley started in two games this weekend at Eckerd College, and collected two wins in two complete games. In 14 innings of work, she struck out 18 batters and allowed only two runs on four hits. This weekend, Dooley moved into the top five in UT history in career strikeouts (478), complete games (62), and career victories (53). Dooley has a 6-0 record in six complete games, with a 0.53 ERA, and she's averaging just over nine strikeouts per seven innings. The four-year starter has allowed only one walk in 40 innings in the circle.
The Spartans won the first series of conference play against Eckerd College, defeating the Tritons on Friday night and spilting on Saturday afternoon. Tampa is 8-2 on the year, with two victories over ranked opponents, as well as regional wins over #22 Valdosta State and West Georgia.
UP NEXT: The University of Tampa will host Florida Southern for a three-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 22 at the Naimoli Family Field, first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
