Spartans Sweep to 12th Straight Victory

TAMPA, Fla. –  The University of Tampa softball team secured two 3-0 victories on Saturday afternoon, ultimately sweeping the SSC's best in a three-game slate. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):

HOW IT HAPPENED:

BOT 6th: In a dead-locked game, Lexie Chevalier led off the sixth with a base-knock up the middle. Lauren Pascoe pinch-ran for Chevalier as Corynn Miner attempted to bunt, but the Sharks' pitcher threw the ball into centerfield. Pascoe scored from first on the errant throw which gave UT a one-run lead. With two runners on, Maddie Farrell continued her hot-hitting with an RBI single up the middle. Makaleigh Dooley helped the offense with an RBI base knock of her own to extend the lead.

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Dooley made her 20th start of the season and logged her 16th complete game; the senior struck out three batters and allowed only two hits.
  • Farrell has recorded multiple hits in six of the last 10 games.
  • Sam Worrell registered Tampa's only extra-base hit, with her team-leading sixth double of the year.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Tampa's riding an 11-game winning streak after the game two victory over NSU.
  • The Spartans have not allowed a run in 11 games this season. In the last nine games, UT has given up a total of six runs including six shut-outs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

BOT 2nd: To lead off the inning, Maddie Farrell connected with a single through the left side. Mackenzie Allen pinch-ran for Farrell and scored on an RBI single from freshman shortstop, Stephanie Balmer.

BOT 6th: With one out, Corynn Miner reached base on an infield single. The red-shirt sophomore moved to third base following an errant throw and a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, Dooley helped herself with a two-RBI single to shallow center field and she extended the lead to 3-0. 

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Miner made her sixth start of the season, and struck out one batter in two innings of work.
  • Dooley came in relief for the third time this year and collected her 16th victory in the process.
  • Dooley matched her season-high with two RBI; she accomplished this task against Eckerd College on Feb. 15.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Tampa's currently riding a 12-game winning streak dating back to March 9.
  • The Spartans have not allowed a run in 12 games this season. In the last ten games, UT has given up a total of six runs including seven shut-outs.
