Streak Continues as Spartans Dominate Rollins in SSC Opener
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team registered a decisive 61-49 victory over defending Sunshine State Conference regular season champion Rollins College. Tampa, winners of seven straight, are 7-1 overall and 1-0 in SSC play. The Tars are now 4-1 and 0-1 in league action.
Tampa never trailed, leading by as many as 17 points. UT scored the game's first basket on a pair of Erica Woodard free throws at 16:40. After Rollins tied the game at 10-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half, UT outscored the Tars 13-6 to take a seven point lead to halftime.
The Spartans did not let up in the second half, taking their first double figure advantage at 16:53. The lead remained in double figures for all but one possession as Tampa put away Rollins to secure the 12 point victory.
UT enjoyed its top three-point shooting effort of the young season, connecting on 7-11 from long range. Tampa also outshot Rollins 44.2 to 31.7 percent as UT also shot 80 percent from the free throw line.
Angela Guiu enjoyed a career effort, returning to her hometown to score a team-high 20 points while making 6-6 three-pointers. She also added five rebounds as her three assists came with no turnovers in 39 minutes of play.
Sheena Walton added 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to go with three blocked shots. She also led the team with a pair of offensive rebounds. Alexa Kane chipped in seven points and a team-high three steals while Erica Woodard led the Spartans with four assists.
Tampa returns home where it will welcome West Georgia on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
