Spartans Defeat Saint Leo for 10th Win
TAMPA, Fla. - The
University of Tampa women's basketball team improved to 10-2
overall with a 69-53 win over Sunshine State Conference opponent
Saint Leo University (7-6, 0-2). With the win, Tampa moves to 2-0
in the conference.
The Spartans never trailed in the game as they got out to an
early 4-0 lead with baskets by Sheena Walton and Alexa Kane in the
first minute and a half of the game. Tampa extended the advantage
to double figures with a three-pointer by DeShaydia Mackey with
just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Spartans held
the double digit lead until half time, heading into the break with
a 38-25 lead.
Tampa got off to a bit of a slow start in the second half as it
outscored the Lions 14-11 in the first five minutes of the half.
The Spartans then went on a 31-17 run to close out the game, never
letting the lead drop below 16 points the rest of the way.
Angela Guiu led all scorers with 18 points on 6-9 shooting, all
from behind the arc. Mackey and Walton joined Guiu in double
figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Walton and Mackey also
finished tied for the team-lead in rebounds with 6 as Mackey added
6 assists.
The Spartans return to floor on Saturday as they travel to
Melbourne, Fla. to on Florida Tech in an SSC matchup. Tip-off is
scheduled for 2 pm.
