Spartans Fall to Valdosta State
VALDOSTA, Ga. - In a rematch of last season's NCAA South Regional opening round matchup, The University of Tampa (1-1) women's basketball team dropped a 55-27 decision to Valdosta State University (2-0) in the VSU Manwell Produce Classic.
The first half of the game was dominated by both teams defenses, with the Blazers taking a 20-12 lead to halftime. Valdosta State pulled away in the second half as it outscored the Spartans 35-15 to close out the game.
Tiara Cook led all Tampa scorers with seven points as Lauren Mason added six off the bench. Caitlyn Mitryk led the Spartans with eight rebounds while Cook grabbed seven. Cook also turned in a pair of steals to lead Tampa.
The Spartans return home for its home opener on Tuesday, where it hosts Puerto Rico-Cayey at 5:30 p.m. UT will offer live stats and a webcast through www.tampaspartans.com. Fans may also sign up for eScores through the website, a free service that sends text messages on Spartan athletic events.
