Spartans Record Easy Home Victory Over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa rolled over visiting Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 60-33 in Tuesday night's non-conference match-up. The Spartans never trailed in the game as they improved to 3-1 on the season while the visiting Gamecocks fell to 0-3.
The Spartans started the game with a 14-0 run, holding the Gamecocks scoreless through the first 12:09 of the opening half. Neither team was particularly stellar offensively in the first half as Rio Piedras committed 14 turnovers while Tampa had 12 of their own.
However, Tampa was able to establish a 29-14 lead at the break.
Senior Kym Taylor led the Spartans, recording the team's first double-double of the season by scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The center's strong effort was complimented by sophomore Catriana Messina who finished the evening as UT's leading point-scorer with 12.
Sonia Roman led all scorers with 14.
