Spartans Dominate in the Paint for Road Win Against Mocs

LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Tampa (11-5, 5-2 SSC) women's basketball team defeated Florida Southern College (4-12, 0-7 SSC) 72-62 Wednesday evening.

The Mocs began the game scoring 11 straight points holding the Spartans scoreless until the 15 minute mark in the first half. Although Tampa managed to get its offense flowing they still faced a deficit of 14 points during the period.

Illyssa Vivo led the team at the half with eight points, while Taylor McVey and Shamika Williams added seven points apiece.

Florida Southern started the second half with a three-point basket taken by Cashala Thompson who was 4-of-6 from downtown. Tampa went on a 19-4 run over a nine minute stretch at the bottom of the period. The Spartans had their way with the Mocs in the paint as they were successful in attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. UT officially took the lead with just over eight minutes to go and never looked back.

Williams led all scorers and finished the game with a double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds), while four other Spartans scored in double figures. Ellen Nurmi recorded 17 points; Juliana Cavallaro registered 11 points, while McVey and Vivo finished with 10 points apiece.

Tampa will host No. 3 Nova Southeastern this Saturday at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. Spartans lead the all-time series 20-7. The Sharks trumped the Spartans 65-56 in their last meeting (2/16/13).

Tickets are available at the gate for $5. Children 12-and-under will be admitted free. UT faculty, staff and students are admitted free when displaying a valid Spartan ID card.
