Spartans Declaw Panthers for 8th Straight Victory
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (16-5, 9-2 SSC) women's basketball team defeated Florida Tech (14-9, 5-6 SSC) for their eighth straight victory in an overtime thriller by a score of 76-68 Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
Tampa was evenly paced with Florida Tech for the first 17 minutes of the game, when Ellen Nurmi hit a three-point basket to give the Spartans their first double digit lead. Tampa's stifling defense held Florida Tech to only 19 points at halftime while shooting 25 percent from the field.
The Spartans offense was led by senior guard Shamika Williams scoring seven points and dishing out four assists. Both Illyssa Vivo and Ellen Nurmi finished the half with seven points apiece. Tampa shot 50 percent from the field.
Tampa held its lead for the majority of the second half, capturing their largest lead of 13 points off a layup by Junior guard Keke Jones.
Despite Tampa's apparent control, Florida Tech battled back to tie the game at 54 a piece with a minute left in the second half. A last second stand by the Spartans defense would force a missed shot by the Panthers to lead the game into overtime.
Tampa dominated overtime starting off with a pair of triples from Vivo and Nurmi. The Spartans would control the lead for the rest of the game thanks to their defensive pressure and clutch free throw shooting.
Williams finished the game with her fifth double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Vivo and Nurmi equally contributed adding 17 points. Sophomore forward Aisha Rodney came off the bench to add 10 points and seven rebounds.
Tampa will face off against conference opponent Saint Leo this Wednesday on the road. Tampa owns the all-time record 75-15. The Spartans won their last meeting earlier this season 70-55 (1/8/14).
