Spartans Tame Lions for 9th Win in a Row
SAINT LEO, Fla.-The University of Tampa (17-5, 10-2 SSC) women's basketball team earned its ninth straight win over Saint Leo University (15-7, 6-6 SSC) on the road by a score of 76-63 Wednesday night.
The Spartans were led by a balanced attack in the first half as Shamika Williams and Illyssa Vivo paved the way with nine points each, while Juliana Cavallaro and Taylor McVey contributed eight points apiece.
Tampa's stout defense held Saint Leo's high potent offense to just 26 points at halftime, as they forced eight turnovers in the half. UT's offense was on fire in the first as the Spartans shot a highly efficient 56 percent from the floor.
Saint Leo began to make comeback pounding the ball in the paint, cutting the lead to single digits. However, the Spartans had an answer as Vivo knocked down three three-point baskets in a span of four minutes to stretch the lead back to 17 with 11 minutes remaining. UT's consistent ability to convert clutch shots prevented Saint Leo from being able to get back in the game.
Five Spartans finished in double figures as Williams and Vivo led the team in scoring with 16 points respectively. Aisha Rodney gave Tampa a great spark off the bench scoring 13 points and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field. McVey also contributed 12 points and Ellen Nurmi finished with 11 points. Cavallaro finished with eight points, while dishing out a career-high nine assists.
Tampa will travel to conference foe Lynn this Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. Tampa leads the all-time series 33-8. The Spartans trumped the Fighting Knights 77-52 in their last meeting (1/18/14).
