Panthers Leave Spartans Wounded

TAMPA, Fla.  – The University of Tampa women's basketball team traveled to Melbourne to take on the Florida Tech Panthers but fell in a tought battle, 58-54.

All-time Series: Tampa is now tied in the all-time series with the Panthers with a 35-35 mark.

1st Quarter | The first quarter was a close battle between the Spartans and the Panthers as neither team led by more than a three point margin. Junior Karma Jeremie was the first player on the floor to score, on a jumpshot. The Panthers quickly retaliated by sinking a three pointer and a jumper shot, giving them the lead. Jenny Horvatinovic tied the game after making a deep three point shot assisted by junior Faith Sanders. After a steal from Horvatinovic, Elena de Alfredo recorded her first points on a layup. The Panthers led by one point heading into the second quarter. 

2nd Quarter | The Panthers were the first to score in the second half on a three pointer. The followed up with back-to-back baskets, a layup from Jeremie and a three pointer from de Alfredo. Junior Morgan Lumb got in on the action, giving the Spartans the lead, after sinking a three pointer of her own. But the Panthers rallied back and led 22-19 heading into half time. 

3rd Quarter | The third quarter started much like the previous quarters, with the teams trading points. However, the Panthers began to string together baskets that would give them their largest lead, 11 points, with three minutes left in the third quarter. The Spartans went on a big offensive run that would bring them within two points of the Panthers heading into the final quarter, 39-37. 

4th Quarter | The fourth quarter was a battle between the two teams as the largest lead was only four points. With just under two minutes left in the game Lumb sunk a three pointer that would make the game 55-54, Panther advantage. But the Panthers would retaliate on a jumper and free throw shot that gave them the 58-54 victory.  


  • Lumb was the leading point scorer with 18 points.
  • de Alfredo was the second leading point scorer with 15, followed by Jeremie who had 13.
  • As a team, the Spartans shot 47 percent from the field.


  • Lumb set a new career high for points with 18. 
  • Jeremie tallied her sixth double-double for the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

UT will host Lynn University Fighting Knights at 2:00 pm on Saturday. Seniors Elena de Alfredo, Jenny Horvatinovic, and Teresa Kucera will be honored for their contributions to the athletic program.
