Spartans Fall to Trojans
Tampa, Fla. - The University of Tampa Women's Lacrosse team had six different players net at least one goal but it wasn't enough as the Spartans fell to Mount Olive 14-8 Thursday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. With the win the Trojans improve to 4-1, while the Spartans drop to 1-4.
The Spartans struck first as Kerry Glenday converted a free position shot, just over a minute into the game. After a Trojans goal, Mackenzie Perna found Maggie Griffo in front of the cage for the man-up goal to give the Tampa a 2-1 advantage. The Trojans evened the score, before Glenday found Mallory Mays for a goal with 23:02 left in the first half. Mount Olive scored three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead. Tampa responded as Morgan Cheripko scored back-to-back goals to even the score one final time at 5-5 with 2:47 left in the opening period. The score remained tied until 18 seconds left in the first half when Katie McGovern scored an unassisted goal to give Mount Olive a 6-5 lead at the break.
Mount Olive scored the first six goals of the second half to take a 12-5 lead with 11:47 left in the second half. Tampa responded as Glenday scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 12-6. After a Trojans goal, Emilie Barbosa scored a man-down goal for the 14-8 final.
Glenday finished the game with two goals and an assist, while Cheripko netted a pair of goals and led the Spartans with eight draw controls.
Wylie Cassidy made eight saves in the contest, including five in the second half.
The Spartans will return to action Monday, March 10, when they host No. 3 Limestone College at 6:00 p.m. at Namoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. Live stats and a video webcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
