Saint Leo, Fla. - The eighth-ranked University of Tampa and 19th-ranked Saint Leo University were tied through two halves of soccer and the first overtime before UT senior Malana Winskas scored the game-winning goal at the 105:08 mark of double overtime to give the Spartans a 2-1 victory. Tampa improves to 6-1 on the season after the Sunshine State Conference battle between arguably the top two teams in the league. The Spartans are now 2-0 in SSC play as the Lions fall to 2-1.
Saint Leo scored the games first goal on an unassisted goal by Hannah Beard at the 46:48 mark. Tampa evened the score at 1-1 as Kara Rasmussen headed in a goal on a set piece by teammate Alison Penland. The game remained tied through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime before Winskas scored wqith 5:08 remaining in the final overtime period on a header into the top corner off a corner kick by Penland, who finished with two assists.
The game, which was delayed by over an hour due to weather, was dominated by defense as there were a total of 17 combined shots in the 105:08 of play. Tampa finished with 10 shots as Saint Leo was credited with seven. Tampa goalkeeper Shannon Aitken received the win as she made three saves, two of which came in the overtime periods. The game also featured 58 total fouls, 33 by the Spartans and 25 by the Lions.
Tampa returns home for a pair of weekend games at Pepin Stadium. The Spartans host Flagler on Friday at 7:00 pm and return on Sunday against Florida Tech at 2:00 pm.
