Gerry Lucey Named Tampa Head Women’s Soccer Coach
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa has announced that Gerry Lucey has been chosen for the position of Head Women's Soccer Coach. Lucey, formerly the head coach at West Chester University, was an assistant at UT for former coach Bobby Johnston from 2004-06.
"We are pleased to announce the hiring of Gerry Lucey for this position," says Athletic Director Larry Marfise. "We had a great applicant pool and remain excited about the future of our women's soccer program. Gerry knows our program and brings a great track record of success at the collegiate level."
"I am delighted to get back to Tampa to work at such a fine institution," says Lucey. "It has always been a dream of mine to hold this position at The University of Tampa. I have some big footsteps to fill after Bobby (Johnston) and Jay (Entlich). I look forward to getting started and cannot wait for the season to roll around."
Last season, Lucey led the Golden Rams to the program's best season ever while capturing the first women's soccer Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crown. His 23-1 season helped him earn PSAC Coach of the Year honors. He also guided his squad to an NCAA II Final Four appearance, where they were defeated by eventual national champion Metro State in double overtime.
While at Tampa, his team reached the round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships in 2004 and 2005; captured the Sunshine State Conference regular-season crown in 2005; and won the league's tournament title in 2004.
Before heading to Tampa, Lucey served as the head coach of the C.W. Post women's program (1999-2000) and was the assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs from 1994-99. He was named the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Coach of the Year in 2000 after taking over the program's reins for the final few games of 1999.
Lucey played professionally from 1994-2000 with the NY/NJ Metrostars (MLS), Long Island Roughriders (USL A League), New Jersey Imperials (USL Division I) and New York Fever (USL Division 1).
As an undergraduate, Lucey competed for C.W. Post from 1991-93, earning NYCAC Player of the Year honors and NSCAA All-American accolades in 1993. He was the NYCAC Rookie of the year in 1990 while playing for NYIT, and he earned All-NYCAC and All-Region honors during each of his four years in the conference.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, Lucey is a 1994 graduate of C.W. Post with a degree in business. He also earned his master's degree in business administration from C.W. Post in 2000.
