Tampa Women's Soccer Cruises to 3-1 Victory in Season Opener
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tampa women's soccer team opened its 2025 campaign with a convincing 3-1 win at Trevecca Nazarene University on Thursday night, using a balanced attack and strong defensive presence to secure the road result at the Trojan Soccer Complex.
The Spartans got on the board early when sophomore Ally Wold broke through in the 14th minute, finishing a cross from teammate Jalen Haas. The momentum nearly stayed with Tampa, but Trevecca found an equalizer in the 44th minute as Noelle Garcia struck from close range to send the match into halftime tied 1-1.
Tampa wasted no time regaining the lead in the second half. In the 49th minute, freshman Brielle Johnston scored the game-winner, slotting home after Lauren Holschauer and Tara McDonald combined to set her up inside the box. The Spartans kept applying pressure, and in the 67th minute, Sydni Dennis buried a penalty kick after a Trojan foul in the box, stretching the lead to 3-1.
Defensively, Tampa held firm, limiting Trevecca to just two shots on goal all evening. Goalkeeper Lia Doohan earned her first win of the season with a key first-half save to keep the Spartans in front.
Several other Spartans made their mark in the opener. Haas finished with an assist and multiple shot attempts, McDonald added an assist while generating two quality chances, and Mimi Cronquist and Kate Russell each put pressure on the Trojan defense with shots on target.
Tampa finished with a 13-8 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks, controlling much of the second-half possession to close out the victory.
With the win, the Spartans start the season 1-0-0, while Trevecca Nazarene falls to 0-1-0.
